Zurich’s oldest Christmas market is a tiny world of its own, located in the heart of the Niederdorf quarter of the Old Town. The numerous market stalls line the centrally located Niederdorfstrasse and spill onto Hirschenplatz and Rosenhof, so that it is easy to lose track of time when browsing through the multitude of wares on sale. A visit to the Christmas market in the Old Town during the Advent period is an absolute must – even if only to take a stroll and sample some mulled wine.
Zurich’s most central Christmas market takes place in the main concourse of the Main Train Station. Featuring 150 stalls it is one of the largest indoor Christmas markets in Europe. As soon as travelers alight from the train, they are drawn to the market by the irresistible scent of mulled wine and cinnamon. The absolute highlight of the Christkindlimarkt is a 50-ft-tall Christmas tree decorated with thousands of sparkling Swarovski crystals.
If you stroll along the Bahnhofstrasse during the Advent period, sooner or later you will come across the Christmas market at Werdmühleplatz. Although it is one of the city’s newest Christmas markets, it has already firmly established itself among visitors and locals alike. One good reason for this is without doubt its unique attraction – the Singing Christmas Tree. Rowed up on a vertical podium in the shape of an enormous Christmas tree, various choirs from the region spread Christmas cheer with their repertoire of Christmas carols.
