The Rose festival (Rose and Thracian gold)

Bulgaria is one of the biggest producers of rose oil. It is extracted from the petals of rose damascene which has been growing since 15 century. The rose oil and water are a major component in the perfumery business. It is also used in the space industry, as a greasing component in space equipment, due to its resistance to temperature changes. Do not miss the traditional desserts prepared with this unique ingredient.
The Rose festival is held in Kazanlak which is situated in the Valley of Rose at the foot of the Balkan Mountains and is held every year during the first weekend of June. Everyone can be part of the morning ritual in the rose fields, enjoy the parade along the streets of the town, the folk dances and the election of Queen Rose. In addition, you can experience a flight with a balloon above the Valley of Roses and the nearby dam Koprinka. Make the best of your tour by visiting the Valley of Thracian kings. This is the place where more than 1500 tombs of Thracians aristocrats were found and where you can feel the ancient civilization dating from 4th century B.C. Bulgaria is situated in the very heart of Thrace – the cradle of wine making from ancient times. The Thrace region is famous with its unique Mavrud wine – ancient red grape wine variety. Robust and productive, the Mavrud grape is locally appreciated and improves in maturing. Other grape wine varieties from Thracian Valley are: Pamid, Hamburg misket, Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. The cult to Dionysus the god of wine and fertility has transmitted from here to Ancient Greece.

Nowadays, a lot of remains from occult temples are overt. Bulgaria has continued the tradition of making quality wine and today is one of the best wine destinations worldwide.
